Istanbul (Constantinople) : HOT days in the Olde Towne (and several delectable nights)!!!! : I DO want to post a kind of 'warning' to unescorted females who (may) think Istanbul is just a shopper's paradise (it can be if they have what you're looking for.....that Grand Bazaar is immensely and most thoroughly sensually seductive!) For the squeamish.... the totally fabulous, incredibly decadent and very old jewelry MAY be plunder from... Armenia so if that's not your cup of (apple) tea... be aware of dates and of origins.

Ok, here's another kind of tourist attraction: Many Turkish males appear to feel that unescorted women are fair game and so the adventurous and not-so-stupid men are playing a numbers game.

Of course the sellers of tempting goods, carpets, lamps, clothing and jewelry, want you to see their wares.... and they are not only psychological masters of salesmenship but are also VERY persistent in pursuit of their goals. Every shop seems to have a 'special (back) room' where the 'better things' are kept and the lovely line of seductive patter is honeyed warmth to virtually any lady's heart... by intuitively clever design.

The incipient tears in a disappointed Turk's eyes are so verrrry.... well, so very.

In interviewing other (unescorted) women I met while there, the common thread I heard was, ''WHAT is WITH these MEN???'' (Think: naked ladies in a harem ; ).

In pursuing this thread with shopkeepers and others, I discovered that American and British single women are (hoped to be, because of successful past experiences) 'sexually loose' and therefore commonly available.

Turks who are of Kurdish descent are particularly handsome and I also discovered that married women from around the world come to Istanbul in search of affairs, no fools they. Men do this as well because the women are no slouches either.

You can discorage unwelcome advances by hurrying on... which, in my experience, sometimes diminishes the enjoyment of even BEING there.

A female who does not wish to be harrassed by the men, (Rome, in the 60's was something like this), must simply keep moving, cross the street, perhaps ask a policeman to make the person leave her alone and just keep ignoring the male.

At first I thought the 'Tourist Police' (funny name, that) might be there to make SURE you bought a ton of stuff... but they have other uses as well :)

'No' and 'no thank you' are mostly ignored.

"Why don't you say 'YES, thank you', ma'am???'' It's truly amazing how many men want to 'practice their English' with you. Think of the expression, 'putting a little English (on the ball)', and you'll have a clearer idea of what, uh, cunning linguistic treats are being proffered.

So... it's a beautiful city with many delights of all kinds, many fattening, most visual, (the ice cream, alone, will put you under), much of it enticingly sensual and ever so lucious and, yes, it's all there for the having.

If being almost literally pounced upon at every turn is your idea of fun... go for it.

It's a lovely place... just be aware that, as you would if swimming in dangerous waters, you might not want to get in over your head... or, then again, maybe you do :)

The choice of Turkish delights is entirely yours.
